On the basis of common sense, how on earth could Edith know that Bertie was different from other men? You can't know beforehand 100-% sure whom you can trust, you can know it only afterwards. It was no wonder that Edith was afraid.
However, the Ritz scene ignored also *why* Edith did wrong. She thought only about her own happiness. If she had thought about Bertie's happiness, she had told him straigthaway because she couldn't betray him.
I did feel the Ritz scene was rushed through a bit. While Bertie said he'd been doing badly since calling off Edith's engagement, he could've elaborted on that more. He could have said he realized he still loved her inspite of the loss of trust, and perhaps realized not only that she did try to tell him the night before, but that if he had been in her shoes he would have been just as nervous to speak to her. In some ways Edith's hesitance reminds me of Mary's in telling Matthew about Pamuk. Edith and Bertie also I thought would come to an agreement to keep no more secrets from one another, but we never saw that.
On the other hand, I'm still glad that Edith and Bertie reunited. I actually think it's because she did not speak up to Bertie before is why she chose to tell the truth to his mother right away.
Yes. And Bertie had to show that he could stand by her against her.
But also Brancaster scenes were too rushed.
Fellowes should have given Edith and Bertie more scenes in the finale and leave some of other scenes out and/or handled them earlier.

So he retired from the army in 1923 aprox, in that time only professional officers composed the army; voluntary officers like Matthew or Gregson were discharged in 1919. So Bertie was trained as professional officer before the war, and to 1923 only the best officers keep their post because the army was reduced in consideration of costs of war. So we can assume, that he was a competent officer and also a land agent for the way he conducted himself when the Crawleys opened the house. His personality i think that was influenced by his parents, especially his mother. Apart from his name "Bertie" he reminded me the character of George VI in the king speech, humble, overlooked and for that reason unassuming.
Mentioning The King's Speech reminds me of Bertie's conversation with Edith where he wanted her help in finding his courage to be a county leader. He already has capability and competence. And like George VI's wife and queen, Edith it seems will be the rock upon which her husband will be able to move forward in life. And of course I'm sure Bertie would be a loving stepfather to Marigold and any child(ren) he has with Edith.
I agree, a good comparision with George VI and Bertie. He will be not only the loving (step)father and husband but is in every respect the ideal son-in-law! Hope we will see more of Bertie and Edith in future. There will be a lot of inspiration in the life of both to tell about and of course there will be a scandal about Marigold in a new series...and a family Pelham which we do not know. What about the former wife-to-be of Peter (as Bertie mentioned), she will no doubt be too happy seeing a good future cast away... I understood that Bertie's father was the agent before and that Peter and Bertie started more or less at the same time in a new position, Peter as the marquess and Bertie as the agent... so what happened ?
Bertie I believed mentioned that Peter's parents and those of his cousin Adele Graham were the ones who arranged the match, or rather expected them to get married. Of course we've never seen Adele, and for a while I wondered if maybe they might try to get her to marry Bertie once Peter died. Then again, Bertie said to Edith he never told his mother they'd split up, so it's likely the Grahams didn't know either. Perhaps Adele sought to move on and find another fish as it were, kind of like how Mary did when Patrick Crawley drowned. She might not have wanted to marry Bertie considering he used to be poor and penniless (meaning she might be as stuck up as Larry Grey). And finally I wonder if she had married Peter it would have been happy, since there were a number of clues implying Peter was gay.
Moving on, I mentioned in a forum I made for speculating on what might have happend had the show gone on or if there will be movies, I'd love to see Bertie and Edith as a married couple, with a son and heir, and also have Marigold surprise the family by revealing she figured the truth out on her own, but loves her mother and stepfather even more.
Basically I think when Bertie broke off his relationship with Edith due to lack of trust, he thought he knew what he was doing was right and that he would probably find another woman to love or be like his late cousin, Peter, who didn't marry and ran Brancaster. But then I bet when he got back to Brancaster after attending his late cousin's funeral in Tangiers, he probably regretted what he'd done and through the days/months gone by he couldn't stop thinking about Edith and that was when he came into the realisation that he still loves her, she has had a profound impact on his life. Then I think he would have realised that Edith was going to tell him the truth about Marigold eventually, but he didn't really give her the chance to explain or maybe Edith just wanted to protect him so that he wouldn't be tied to scandal and probably because she was afraid of his reaction to the real truth about Marigold's illegitimacy. So he might have known that if he had been in her shoes, and that if he'd endured what Edith had gone through: heartbreak and heartache, bearing a secret child, being rejected and forgotten he'd know why she was wary of telling him. In the Ritz scene, he admitted to Edith that he would have come back to her even if Mary hadn't telephoned him. so yeah, he couldn't live without her and wanted her back to be his wife as he believes with her intellect, confidence and inspirational nature, she can help him through his duties, support him as well as overall be a good marchioness/wife/mother. Edith's the rose to his thorns, the sunshine of his clouds and everything. I think he will care for Marigold in a fatherly like manner as well as other child/children he has with Edith. So there you have it. I think their married life will be relatively happy
I completely agree with you. I could tell from the look in his eyes when he split up with her that he still cared for her, especially when she blamed herself for throwing away the chance of her life being "perfectly wonderful". I reiterate my belief that their split then reminded me very much of when Matthew broke off with Mary at the end of season 1 - love was still there. Who knows, maybe that's why Mary later told Edith she was never convinced things between her and Bertie were over.
A couple of things I love about Bertie and Edith. One is how; especially in comparison to Mary's men, he respects her enough not to push her. When they kissed for the first time he noted he was relieved he wasn't pushing his luck. If you look at the way he held her it was very tender, but she had the opportunity to leave. And the progression was so natural. He took a bit of a fancy to her and they struck up a friendship before gradually falling in love. There was no power play or games; like in a lot of Mary's relationships. Finally, what I love most is the way that they both have relatively low self-esteem. I think they're both quite confident, but they don't have high opinions of themselves. Bertie says he doesn't have much to offer and Edith doesn't think she is worthy of what he does have. And yet, they both see how utterly fantastic the other person is. They see the strengths and wonders about them that the rest of the world seems to overlook and they don't know they have. They both think themselves so lucky to have the other and don't think they deserve the love the other has for them. But Bertie and Edith see the goodness in each other. She calls him kind and he calls her inspirational and it is fucking adorable!
I admit I wasn't sure at first, but Berdith quickly won me over this season. They are great together.
Indeed, what a Lovely couple!
