Series 3 of Downton Abbey premiered in the UK on September 16, 2012, and premiered in the US on January 6, 2013.
Like series 2, this series is composed of eight episodes in addition to a Christmas episode. It will span through the year 1920, and end in 1921. It is a time of tremendous change,but for the Crawley family, it might be the end following a bad investment, resulting in a tremendous loss of money.
This series marks the first appearance of a number of Crawley relatives: the Marquess of Flintshire, his wife, and family, and most notably, Cora's mother Martha Levinson portrayed by Shirley MacLaine. There are tense rivalries and romances below stairs with a number of new characters: Matt Milne, Ed Speleers, Cara Theobald, and Myanna Buring cast as footmen Alfred and Jimmy and maids Ivy and Edna, respectively. Former maid Ethel and her son have fallen on hard times, while Anna is determined to find evidence to free her incarcerated husband.
Lady Mary and Matthew finally marry. The growing unrest in Ireland will also affect the Crawley family, as Lady Sybil returns with her political husband Tom. Sybil will also deliver her first child.
