The Post Office was a small post office situated in the village of Downton in Yorkshire. The sign outside it says "POST OFFICE & TELEGRAMS", and it was run by Mrs Wigan and the Postmaster. It was open in April 1912 and was still open, with the same Postmistress working there, in February 1922.

The post office, among other things, sells stamps and postcards, takes letters and telegrams and sells advertisement space to be placed on small cards in the window.

In February 1922 Rose MacClare pays to put a small card in the post office window advertising for the job of lady's maid. Edna Braithwaite sees this advert and goes into the post office to ask the postmistress for more details.
