"His lordship was born with a rod in one hand and a gun in the other."
—Nield praising his employer.[src]

Nield is gamekeeper at Duneagle Castle, and is seen with Matthew Crawley at target practice, and then out stalking with Lord Grantham and his employer, the Marquess of Flintshire.

Nield describes deer, which are "stalked," as majestic beasts, and tells Matthew that he is not shooting at pheasants, which were the game back at Downton. He has high standards when it comes to stalking, as hinted by Lady Rose MacClare. He praises his employer as having been born with a rod in one hand and a gun in the other. Hugh remarks that that sounds uncomfortable.

Wilkins later asks him for whiskey at the ball.  He is surprised that she would want it, when in truth she used it to spike a drink she intended to give Sarah O'Brien, of whom she was jealous.
