Downton Abbey[]

1920[]

When Edith Crawley goes to London to meet Michael Gregson to consider writing for his magazine, he suggests they have lunch at Rules. There they get to know each other better, and Edith accepts his offer.

1924[]

Mary suggests a luncheon outing for herself, Rose, Tom, and Edith as a way to celebrate Rose's final days unmarried before her wedding to Atticus Aldridge. Edith remarks to Tom of her memories of the place with Michael, while Rose receives very disturbing pictures of Atticus (part of a plot by her mother to stop the marriage from taking place). Tom comments on the pictures in a way that shows he is becoming a member of the upper class.

1925[]

Bertie asks Edith out for a drink after they coincidentally meet in London. Edith initially arranges that they have it at Rules but after having to face a deadline at the Sketch, Edith rushes to meet Bertie at Rules and tell him that she can't have a drink with him. However Bertie insists that he will come with her to the office and help her out. After paying money to the bartender, Bertie and Edith go out of the restaurant.

  • The real life Rules restaurant looks just as it did 100 years ago in terms of interior decoration, and is therefore the perfect filming location for when a restaurant scene is required.
