Brancaster Castle is a residence in Northumberland owned by the Marquess of Hexham.

Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, came to Brancaster Castle once when he was young in old Lord Hexham's day since they were trying to marry Robert off to a niece.

Peter, the 6th Marquess, preferred spending most of his time on holiday in Tangiers, and thus Brancaster would be rented out for parties in his absence.

In one such case, it was rented by Lord Sinderby for a grousing party in Autumn of 1924, to which the Crawley family was also invited. Lord Sinderby makes the precarious decision to take his own butler, Stowell, to the castle to oversee both the upstairs world and below as Brancaster's butler was absent at the time. Also in attendance were Henry Talbot, Charlie Rogers, and the agent, Bertie Pelham.

Bertie was also a distant cousin of Lord Hexham, with whom he was very good friends. When Peter passed away in 1925, Bertie stood as heir and became the 7th Marquess of Hexham. He and his widowed mother Mirada Pelham moved into the castle. She specifically lived in a suite of rooms that had been made into a flat "for an aunt".

Bertie, soon after his elevation to Marquess, married Lady Edith Crawley, who thus became the Marchioness of Hexham. Edith's daughter Marigold was to move to Brancaster by the time she and Bertie returned from their honeymoon.
