Dowager Moments

Some of the things the Dowager came out with were hilarious, I'm sure she could have been a stand up comedienne in her day.  I loved the one where Richard Carlisle was leaving Downton, he said to the Dowager 'I doubt we'll meet again'  her reply was 'Do you promise' Wonderful. She added such humour in a very subtle way.  Do you have a fave one?

Members Against Global Goals

The purpose of this post is to show that not all members of the Wikia community, or this Wikia in particular, endorse it's support for the UN Global Goals agenda, nor can membership here be considered either consent or approval. My forum post on thus topic is included below.

I just want to express my disappointment that a fan site for a TV show has chosen to endorse a political initiative. I do not think it should be doing that regardless of objective, however this one is particularly heinous. I also do not think the forums of this wikia are the appropriate venue for unrelated political discussions, but since it is endorsing this initiative it then becomes related.

Global Goals, otherwise known as the UN 2030 Agenda, has the true objective o…

Did you hear the one about the Earl and the insurance broker?

Barring the odd bit of china dropped in surprise, ornaments broken in a rage and a room-engulfing blaze, life at Downton Abbey doesn’t really take too much of a toll on the house. While life for the inhabitants might be stressful and full of all the drama that interwar living brings, the building itself passes each series relatively unscathed – a good job with all those valuables inside.

Watching our favourite aristocrats live around all that luxury each week got us thinking – with all those jewels, ornaments and priceless artworks just lying around, the Earl’s home insurance premium must be sky-high, surely?

After watching and rewatching as much Downton as we could (just for research purposes, honest…), we’ve counted the diamonds, tallied u…

Downton Abbey Tea Party Menu & CONTEST

The U.S. season finale of Downton Abbey is less than a week away, and as we see it you have two options. You can either bawl your eyes out because you'll have to wait almost another year for the next season... OR you can make this scrumptious Downton Tea Party menu and watch the finale in style.

Check out some of our favorite recipes paired with The Republic of Tea's specialty tea blends inspired by Downton Abbey. Enjoy!

Mrs. Patmore's full-bodied tea has caramel undertones and it is the perfect pairing with a sweet scone. For those of you with a sweet tooth, this tea is for you! It's the perfect tea to kick off your party.

Lord Grantham's malty tea is flavored with organic ginger root. It is spicy with a kick, just like Lord Grantham! Paired…

Downton Abbey Christmas Menu

Hey there Downton fans!

In honor of the upcoming U.S. premiere of Downton Abbey AND the U.K. Christmas Special, we thought it would be fun to create a Christmas menu entirely inspired by Downton Abbey and traditional Edwardian feasts.

So...what would Mrs. Patmore think to make? We have a few ideas! Check it out and enjoy. Also, merry merry Christmas and happy holidays to all!

Every proper meal at Downton Abbey is typically six or more courses (only four displayed today), but it almost always starts with a light soup. Make this Fish Soup Provençale and use only the highest quality fish.

Roast goose and roast turkey were very traditional at the time. Since it's a special occasion, this foie gras stuffing really takes this main course to the next…

Titles and Forms of Address

I just wanted to clear up titles and forms of address in Downton Abbey for those who may not be up to scratch. I read a post earlier assuming baron and baronet were the same thing, so best to clear it up.

The highest noble title, I am excluding royalty, is Duke. We have met only one Duke in Downton Abbey, the Duke of Crowborough in Season 1. A Duke should always be addressed as Your Grace formally, or 'Duke' socially. For example, You should never address the Duke of Westminster as Lord Westminster.

The second highest title is Marquess. We have met at least one of these in Downton, namely the Marquess of Flintshire, who is styled Lord Flintshire. If you ever meet a Marquess, he should be addressed as Lord 'Title' (I.e. You would address the …

Read even more about it

Inspired by Seasons 1 and 2, we published Beyond Downton Abbey — a guidebook to great houses. Season 3 was enough to inspire us to write Beyond Downton Abbey, Volume 2.  All told, we've written about dozens of great houses and the stories of those who lived and worked in them. We've had a lot of fun writing and sharing with fellow Downton fans.

American audiences, as you watch Season 3, we invite you to read the books, available in eBook and paperback, from Amazon.com. For fans in the UK, who are suffering from "Downton withdrawal" at the moment, the books are a great antidote—available on Amazon.co.uk

Thanks. Happy watching and reading in 2013!

Sybil's Pregnant!

I'm so excited that Sybil's pregnant! It's really so exciting! I'm so happy for her and Branson. I wonder if we'll see the baby, but seeing as Sybil and Branson are back this series, we almost definately will, since she'll probably give birth at Downton. Cora wants to see the baby, but Robert wasn't convinced. I hope he'll come round while Sybil's there.

I still sort of wonder why Sybil didn't want Mary and Edith to know to be honest. It's not as if she doesn't trust them, she trusted them not to tell Robert and Cora about her and Branson. Still, we'll probably find out in this series.

I'd also be really interested to find out what gender you think the baby will be and any potential names. Comment and let me know!

Only a couple of hours to go…

Branson as regular

As seen on this promo-pic for Season 3, Branson is standing along with all the other main characters. This might mean that he is now billed as a series regular.

Also, look at how Matthew and Isobel is no more on the left, with all the servants; now we have Sybil there.

And about this 'beloved character' that will die in Season 3. My guess is Patmore, Molesly, Hughes, Violet or Isobel. Patmore, Hughes, Violet and Isobel is all loved by fans, and they are all old. Molesly has his lung issues, and he is also a loved character.

Confusion with the Heir

It seems in other shows and novels people get confused with who can inherit, in Discworld Lady Ramkin seems to be the heir to the Ramkin estate despite the fact that are probably male heirs. In the British show Monarch of the Glen the cousin became the heir for no good reason, the real heir was still alive.

Ages?

I'm confused about Mary, Edith and Sybil's ages. Their pages say they were born in 1890, 1894 and 1897, respectively, but I don't think that's right. I was reading the official companion book to Downton Abbey the other day, and it said that Sybil was 17 when the show began in 1912, meaning she would have been born in 1895. Furthermore, Julian Fellowes wrote that Mary was inspired by one of his ancestors, a grandmother or great-grandmother or something, who was born in 1880, making her "more than 10 years older than Mary" (my paraphrase). Then, in 1x07 (which is set in 1914), Rosamund says that Mary has had four Seasons. I know basically nothing about Seasons or debuts or anything like that, but isn't a young aristocratic lady presented to …

The Difference Between The Game and Charades

As the Dowager Countess knows the difference between "The Game" and "Charades" is that the Game involves guessing the title of a book, play or song (or nowadays a television programme or film) without speaking. Things that bother me...

First, let me say that I'm a huge fan of the series and think it is extremely well crafted and has excellent character development. However, with that being said, I have a bit of nit-picking to do.

1) The Turkish Scandal: When Lord Grantham visits Bates in the pub where he's working and Bates says he quit to prevent a scandal from engulfing their family, Sir Robert asks "What sort of scandal?" and Bates replies "Nothing you need to worry about" and that sort of ends it. If I were Lord Grantham and a scandal what threatening to engulf my family, I'd certainly raise holy hell until I found out what it was and could put a stop to it or verify that it was true. Does anyone else find it strange that Lord Grantham seems to take such a laissez…
