Sybil Crawley

I think Sybil Crawley was about the most beautiful woman on DA. She was also ahead of her time and quite intelligent. Mary and Rose were also beauties. Anyone else think so?

Sybil and Tom

I just LOVED Sybil and Tom! :) Such a great couple. A great story of forbidden love. They were so cute together. They were one of my favorite couples along with Matthew and Mary.

Jessica Brown Findlay is so beautiful

I think Jessica Brown Findlay is so beautiful. I have seen her in DA, Winter's Tale, Albatross, Victor Frankenstein, This Beautiful, Fantastic, and I just watched the first episode of Jamaica's Inn. Very good :) Sybil is my fave character and Jessica played her so well. I'm glad her legacy lived on after her death. I think she was the prettiest on DA.

Character dialects/accents

Has anyone ever created a guide to the dialects or accents of the various characters in the series? For those of us who don't know the intricacies of spoken English language variations (read Americans) it would be helpful to have the insight of one knowledgeable about this subtlety of each character's portrayal. I would expect the writers to have deliberately chosen characters from specific backgrounds for specific roles and that the dialect/accent of those characters is meant to impart information about what to expect or infer about the character's upbringing, life expectations, cultural experiences, and so forth. This would certainly go for the upstairs characters as much as the downstairs.

Atticus Aldridge face in the last episode.

Did anyone else think that Atticus' face looked odd when he came back for the last episode? I thought his face looked a bit puffy and his skin looked blotchy.

Dowager and Tom

Does anyone know the episode where the Dowager explains the system of titles to Tom? I believe this scene is at a party of some kind.

New Downton Abbey TV Show

K, so imagine if Julian Fellowes said, "I'm making another Downton Abbey TV show." Take this very seriously: What do you want it to be about? Would it be a prequel? If so, would it be centered around Robert and Cora's early relationship? Or would it be back when Robert was just a boy? Or would it be when Robert and Cora were already married, with young Mary, Edith, and Sybil? Perhaps it would take place after Downton Abbey? If so, would it be during World War II when Violet and Carson are dead? Would it be during the Great Depression? Perhaps it would have an unrelated cast of characters and take place during the 20th century in a different household? I want your ideas!

Anthony Strallan and Robert's reluctance

Rewatching the series again it really strikes me as odd as to why Robert is so put off on Edith marrying Strallan. I know the reasons he states, but think about it, back in those days (and earlier) fathers made all sorts of arranged marriages for their daughters, many with much younger daughters being married off to men much older than Strallan, whom the daughters did not even want to marry. Here is his daughter, past the age many girls/women get married at the time, in love with this man, wants to marry him, and he is a titled, well-off upper class gentleman. It seems Robert should be glad of it.

Tom Branson's weight gain

Tom seems to have gained about 20 pounds from season 1 to the finale. So you think it was in the script? That he was living the good life and so wasn't so lean and mean? I think not, but that the director didn't think it mattered for his character, so let it be. Your thoughts?

Edith's Illegitimate Daughter

While I thoroughly enjoy the series, did anyone else find the story line of Marigold completely unbelievable? Even though Lord & Lady Grantham were more liberal minded that other aristocrats of the day, there is absolutely no way they would have allowed Edith to keep an illegitimate baby, no matter how much they might love her.

Especially as the whole point of the aristocracy was blood lines, inheritance and legitimacy. For an Earl's daughter to give birth out of wedlock would have meant she would have been forced to give the child up for adoption end of story. To not do so would have caused such a scandal, the entire family would have been outcasts.

Kemal Pamuk's tie

I have just started watching Downton for the seventh time.  You know what it's like, you start actually watching what is going on more carefully, and you notice things.  For instance.  Has anyone ever noticed, in the scene where Thomas is dressing Kemal for dinner.  what a performance he goes through to tie the tie. After all, It is one thin piece of material.  And then, to cap it all, Kemal finishes the whole procedure by pushing up this tiny knot, as you would a full knot in a man's tie. I'm not being picky as I love Downton with a passion as do we all, I was just amused.

Favourite Crawley sister and why?

Sybil for sure.. I admired her for rebelling against the way that aristocrats were supposed to act at the time and she had such a kind and positive personality. Also I 100% ship Sybil and Tom and they are definitely my two favourite characters. Who is everyone else's favourite sister? :)

Why do they do this?

I have noticed that during a conversation, someone will say the odd word in the French way.  For instance, The Dowager might say 'they were preoccupe, instead of preoccupied'  Was this something the nobility did in those days?

vera and the arsenic storyline

Hope someone can shed light;
- If I've got any of the timeline wrong, forgive and correct me! This is driving me crazy..
Looking for a scene regarding the Bates/murder/Arsenic/Vera story which describes how she must have been ingesting arsenic a while, as the halo affect is a commonly know side effect of arsenic poisonong.
Vera was known to ingest arsenic, which became clear in Season 3.
The first time the "halo" is mentioned is by Mrs Whatserrname ( Vera's old lady friend who lived nearby).
The lady mentioned the halo and scrubbing her fingers really hard, and that Vera was edgy and nervious  on the day she ended up dying.
Later on in the show ( I presume within Season 3 before Bates gets out of the lockup), someone mentioned how Vera MUST have committed suicide by ingesting Arsenic because the halo is often seen in people who ingest Arsenic.
I can't find this scene anywhere - where someone discusses how the arsenic effect creates a  halo and the scrubbing of the fingers would have created more arsenic poisoning.
Its driving me crazy I can't find it. And I'm re-watching every episode in Series 2-3 to find it.
I don't mean the first time Anna goes to see that woman friend of Vera ( which is the first time the halo is mentioned). This explanation of the arsenic halo must come after that as a means to clear Bates even more, and prove that Vera was secretly eating arsenic for a while.
Please point me to this episode?

Sybil's Birth Date

I know that it says on one of the scripts early in season 1 that Sybil is 17 at the begining which is 1912 which would make her birth year 1895, but in season 2 episode 7 when Mary and Edith find Sybil and Branson in the inn Mary says Sybil is 21 and the time period then was 1919 after WW1. If that is true wouldn't her real birth year be 1898?
